The Easton couple participated in the Purple Stride Boston walk around Franklin Park Zoo to raise awareness of pancreatic cancer and money fight the disease.

Their 16-member team, Buddy’s Buddies, raised $11,750.

McSweeney was the event’s top fundraiser, collecting $8,330 from friends, family and colleagues. McCrorie, 50, who suffers from pancreatic cancer, said the money just poured in.

“Mark didn’t do anything but spend a couple of hours setting up the website and that was the response. It was really quite incredible,” she said.

Sponsored by the Boston Affiliate of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, the walk raised more than $150,734, almost doubling its goal.

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States and has the highest mortality rate of all the major cancers.

This year, more than 44,000 Americans will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and more than 37,000 will die from the disease.  The number of new cases and deaths caused by this deadly disease are increasing not decreasing.

There are no early detection tools and there is no cure. More than half of patients are diagnosed with advanced disease that has already spread to other organs.

Risk increases when a first-degree relative is diagnosed. Smoking increases your risk two-fold. Adult-onset diabetes can be both a symptom of pancreatic cancer and a risk factor for developing the disease.

Many symptoms of pancreatic cancer are vague and can be attributed to a variety of other conditions. They include abdominal or back pain, weight loss, jaundice, loss of appetite, nausea, and diabetes.

It is the most under-funded and least-studied of all major cancer killers with only 2 percent of the National Cancer Institute’s annual budget dedicated to research.

The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network is a national organization dedicated to advancing research, supporting patients and creating hope for those affected by the disease with a goal to double the survival rate for pancreatic cancer by 2020. To donate, go online to www.pancan.org.
