Continuing the Fight. Why We Walk.

The Denver Lustgarten Walk is due in large part to the passion and dedication of the Phillips Family.  Their continued effort and support has allowed us to raise money funds for pancreatic cancer research close to home.

Leading the team is Meg Phillips.  Below is her story and why she continues to march forward with fire and passion.  A big thank you to her not only for her commitment, but for continually being open to sharing her family's story and inspiring others to fight the fight.  You are an inspiration Meg, thank you!

I met my husband, Rich Phillips, in college in 1969 in northeastern Colorado.  We fell in love and started our life together in 1971.

He always had a strong will and always followed his dreams.  One of those dreams was to start a  construction company .  So, to do that, he went to Alaska and worked on the pipeline for 3 years (off and on).  I stayed in Coeur d’ Alene  Idaho with the 3 kids and we saved everything he made and started Phillips Construction in 1978.  We then moved back to Colorado in 1982 and he continued building in the Denver Metro/Douglas County area.

Living in Parker and raising our family, life was good. Rich was very involved with the community, church and coaching the kids activities. eHH       h  Our children were out of school and starting their own lives.  We then began to travel and enjoy being with each other again.

Then in 2004, Rich was beginning to have some health issues and was diagnosed in the fall of 2004.  We started treatment in early 2005.  He was a fighter and determined to win this battle. Remember, he had a strong will and followed his dreams.  His cancer was diagnosed at stage 4 but he still had faith and hope.  He began the daily routine of radiation and weekly chemo, and during this treatment met many people in the same situation as he was.  He became friends with Bill Allan, whose diagnosis and treatment was almost identical to Rich’s.  They would always check on each other and compare notes to see how each one was feeling and if the treatment was helping.   I too became friends with his wife, Pat, who has joined the committee to help with the walk.

As the disease progressed and Rich’s body was suffering   he indicated he wanted to donate his body to science so maybe it would help find a cure for pancreatic cancer. Also, we talked about donations to someplace that did research for pancreatic cancer.  We were guided to the Lustgarten Foundation, by a dear friend of ours.

My daughter wanted to honor and remember her father by starting a walk so we traveled to Boston to participate in the Lustgarten Walk.  We liked what they were doing and asked them to help us start a walk in our community.

We held our Inaugural walk at Sloans Lake in Nov. on 2007.  We have recruited our family and friends to help with this annual event and we have met many people who have known someone with this terrible disease and even some survivors.

So, I feel honored to continue the fight Rich started, by his strong will and dreams, to help find a cure for pancreatic cancer.  It has helped me heal, to understand to the fullest how fragile and short life really is.

LIVE, LAUGH, LOVE. This is my motto!

A loving and faithful wife
Meg

In all the craziness, sometimes we need to catch our breath and remember why we fight for a cure for this awful disease, so we can share moments like these with our families.

Mission
The National Pancreatic Cancer Foundation is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization officially formed in May of 2009. The Foundation was formed out of many smaller organizations and volunteers throughout the country that have been active in supporting patients and families of pancreatic cancer since 2004. The primary purpose of the organization is to provide direct service to those individuals afflicted with pancreatic cancer and support for their families while providing the impetus to support early detection and preventative methods for this deadly disease.

Pancreatic Cancer is the fourth leading cancer killer and is the only one of the four that is not curable in one form or another. In the last five years over 210,000 individuals have been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and approximately 193,000 or 92% of those lost their battle during the first year. Only 5% of those afflicted with this deadly disease survive to the fifth year and only 3% survive beyond and eventually succumb to this devastating disease. The lack of funding for early detection methods, preventative measures, education and research is the main cause for the high mortality rate during the first year. While the lack of knowledge of this deadly disease among health care providers has been astonishing, even more so is the absence of early detection and preventative methods available. With the absence of early detection, once diagnosed, many physicians send the patient home and say “there is nothing we can do”. Well, we can do something to help provide a better quality of life by providing Hope through your support and others, Courage to fight on and take a stand against this deadly disease and Faith to believe there will be a cure

Drug Boosts Pancreatic Cancer Survival Rate

Researchers comparing pancreatic cancer treatments found notable differences in patient survival rates and quality of life.

French investigators from a private company known as BioMed randomly selected 342 patients with pancreatic cancer. Part of the group was given gemcitabine, the most favored treatment according to oncologists. The other patients were given a combination of four chemotherapy drugs, (oxaliplatin, irinotecan, fluorouracil and leucovorin) known as FOLFIRINOX. The treatments lasted for six months. The purpose of the study was to record the overall survival rates of each group.

Researchers found that even though people on the FOLFIRINOX had a longer average survival rate of 11.1 months, versus the gemcitabine group with 6.8 months, the quality of life for patients on FOLFIRINOX was not as good. At least 5% of patients on the drug combination suffered from low white blood cell counts, fatigue, serious diarrhea, a loss of feeling in their feet and hands, as well as hair loss. After six months, only 31% of patients on FOLFIRINOX reported a decent quality of life, compared with 66% of those on gemcitabine.

Investigators concluded that although the FOLFIRINOX did improve survival rates over gemcitabine, the toxicity of the drug combination caused numerous negative side effects. Therefore investigators recommended that only patients who are younger than 76 years old, and who do not suffer from other health problems use FOLFIRINOX.

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of death from cancer in the United States. For most patients, the prognosis is grim. Only about 6 percent of those with the diagnosis live longer than five years.

The study is published in this week's issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. It was funded by the government of France.

Senior Emergency Kit Worksheets and Checklists

The Senior Emergency KitSM features several worksheets that family caregivers can complete with the help of a senior loved one. This toolkit can be kept in an easy-to-reach location, such as a nightstand, to allow easy access to information.

Checklist of Things to Have in Your File

Keep these documents about your senior loved one in your information management tool file:
The toolkit is part of the Home Instead Senior Care® network’s Answering the CallSM program designed to help family caregivers be ready for a call when a senior loved one needs emergency assistance.

Important Contacts

It’s important that a family caregiver has easy access to the medical and business professionals that manage their senior’s affairs in the event of an emergency. List on the worksheet all of those individuals with whom your senior does business.

Medications and Dosages

Tracking medications is one of the most important exercises that a family caregiver can do to help keep an older adult safe from medication accidents. This worksheet is a valuable resource to keep all of a senior’s medications and dosages up-to-date.

Allergies and Conditions

Your loved ones and any emergency workers who may assist your senior in a medical crisis should be aware of allergies or conditions that a senior is suffering from, including:
  • Foods
  • Seasonal Allergies
  • Medications
  • Heart Problems
  • Diabetes
  • Arthritis
  • Macular Degeneration

Doctor Visit Worksheet

Doctor visits can be confusing for older adults. Take this doctor visit worksheet to an appointment so you can write down questions, answers, and what you need to do next.

Senior Emergency Wallet Card

Keep emergency information quickly available wherever your loved one goes. Information such as emergency contacts, medical data and a medical conditions list are easily available with this wallet card.

Denver residents ask Rep. DeGette for support of Pancreatic cancer research legislation

Posted in March 2010
http://denver.yourhub.com/Denver/Stories/News/Nonprofit/Story~754756.aspx

Volunteers with the Denver affiliate of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network recently visited U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette's Denver office and met with Senior Congressional Aide Andrea Autobee.

The volunteers were asking for Rep. DeGette's support of the Pancreatic Cancer Research & Education Act (H.R. 745), the first substantive pancreatic cancer legislation introduced in the U.S. Congress.

The Pancreatic Cancer Research and Education Act proposes comprehensive research initiatives and programs that would facilitate finding a cure for pancreatic cancer. Once enacted and fully funded, this legislation will create a more targeted approach to fighting pancreatic cancer and provide scientists with the resources necessary to make significant advances.

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States and the most deadly among leading cancer killers with a five year survival rate of 5 percent. There are currently no early detection tools or effective treatments. 76 percent of patients die within the first year of diagnosis. This year, over 42,000 people in the United States will be diagnosed with the disease.

Volunteers from the Denver affiliate of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network will join hundreds of advocates in Washington, D.C. for the organizations Fourth Annual Advocacy Day on June 22 nd. To learn more about the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network and Advocacy Day, visit www.pancan.org

About the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network
The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network is the only national organization creating hope in a comprehensive way through research, patient support, community outreach and advocacy for a cure. The organization raises money for direct private funding of research-and advocates for more aggressive federal research funding of medical breakthroughs in prevention, diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic cancer.

The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network fills the void of information and options by giving patients and caregivers reliable, personalized information they need to make informed decisions. We create a sense of hope and community so no one has to face pancreatic cancer alone. The organization helps support individuals and communities all across the country to work together to raise awareness and funds to find a cure for pancreatic cancer.
