Taking a moment to remember

If you are reading this blog, your life is likely consumed with cancer, specifically pancreatic cancer and understandably, we know it's often hard to think outside of that space. It's an all consuming battle.  At the same time, we would be remiss, if we didn't take a moment to remember those that fell 10 years ago on September 11, 2001. Among them are numerous innocent souls and heroes, who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The September 11 attacks (often referred to as September 11, September 11th or 9/11, in combination with the attacks' side effects on that day) were a series of four coordinated suicide attacks by al-Qaeda upon the United States on Tuesday, September 11, 2001. On that morning, 19 al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial passenger jet airliners. The hijackers intentionally crashed two of the airliners into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, killing everyone on board and thousands of those working in the buildings. Both towers collapsed within two hours, destroying nearby buildings and damaging others. A third airliner was crashed into the Pentagon. Hijackers had redirected the fourth plane toward Washington, D.C., targeting either the Capitol Building or the White House, but crashed it in a field near Shanksville in rural Pennsylvania after passengers attempted to retake control of the airliner. There were no survivors from any of the flights.


Nearly 3,000 victims and the 19 hijackers died in the attacks. Among the 2,753 victims who died in the attacks on the World Trade Center were 343 firefighters and 60 police officers from New York City and the Port Authority, and 8 private emergency medical technicians and paramedics. Another 184 people were killed in the attack on the Pentagon. The overwhelming majority of casualties were civilians, including nationals of over 70 countries.


Suspicion quickly fell on al-Qaeda. Its leader Osama bin Laden initially denied involvement, but in 2004 he finally claimed responsibility for the attacks. Al-Qaeda and bin Laden cited U.S. support of Israel, the presence of US troops in Saudi Arabia, and sanctions against Iraq as motives for the attacks. The United States responded to the attacks by launching the War on Terror, invading Afghanistan to depose the Taliban, who had harbored al-Qaeda members, and by enacting the USA PATRIOT Act. It was not until May 2011 that bin Laden was found and killed. Many other countries also strengthened their anti-terrorism legislation and expanded law enforcement powers. Some American stock exchanges stayed closed for the rest of the week following the attack and posted enormous losses on reopening, especially in the airline and insurance industries. The destruction of billions of dollars' worth of office space caused serious damage to the economy of Lower Manhattan.


The damage to the Pentagon was cleared and repaired within a year, and the Pentagon Memorial was built adjacent to the building. The rebuilding of the World Trade Center site began in 2002 and remains ongoing. Ground was broken for the Flight 93 National Memorial on November 8, 2009, and the first phase of construction is expected to be ready for the 10th anniversary of the attacks on September 11, 2011.

Last year, 400 walkers raised a bit over $100,000 for the Lustgarten Foundation, far exceeding the proceeds from 2009’s walk. Cancer in Colorado, 1998-2003: Incidence, Mortality, and Survival is a publication of the Colorado Central Cancer Registry, which reports statewide, population-based cancer incidence, early detection, survival, and mortality data.

This report contains information on data sources and collection, and technical notes explaining the statistical methods used. Data describing Colorado statewide incidence, early detection, and mortality statistics are presented for all cancers combined and 27 separate kinds of cancer for 1998-2002 and 2003. Comparisons to U.S. cancer incidence and mortality are included for 1998-2002. Five-year cancer survival statistics are displayed for cancer cases diagnosed during 1993-1996 and 1997-2000. Additional tables present 1993-2003 cancer incidence counts and rates by year for over 70 kinds of cancer and 1993-2003 cancer mortality counts and rates by year for 30 selected kinds of cancer. Incidence and mortality rates are age-adjusted and displayed by gender and race/ethnicity. Early detection percentages and survival rates are also displayed by gender and race/ethnicity.

Stay on Top of Your Family History of Cancer

People who are at high risk of cancer as a result of their family history may be advised to undergo earlier or more intensive cancer screening. Because family history of cancer can change over time, it’s important to update this information periodically with your healthcare provider. This was the conclusion of a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Cancer screening involves the use of tests to detect cancer at an early stage in people with no symptoms of the disease. Commonly used screening tests include mammography for breast cancer, colonoscopy for colorectal cancer, and the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test for prostate cancer.

People who are at high risk of a particular cancer as a result of their personal or family medical history may be advised to undergo earlier or more frequent cancer screening, or to be screened with more sensitive tests. Women who have a high risk of breast cancer, for example, are often advised to begin screening at an earlier age than other women, and to be screened with both mammography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Family history of cancer can change over time, and changes in family history may affect which screening tests and schedules are recommended. To explore how often this occurs, researchers collected information from a large database of US adults with a personal and/or family history of cancer.

• The number of people who were candidates for high-risk colorectal cancer screening as a result of family history increased from 2.1% at age 30 to 7.1% at age 50.
• The number of people who were candidates for high-risk breast cancer screening as a result of family history increased from 7.2% at age 30 to 11.4% at age 50.
• The numbers for prostate cancer were smaller, but increased from 0.9% at age 30 to 2.0% at age 50.

These results suggest that family history of cancer (and the screening recommendations that may stem from family history) can change significantly during adulthood. The researchers recommend that healthcare providers collect updated family history information from patients at least every five to ten years.
